News: Rudolph has a new contract to match the significant value the Minnesota Vikings have considered him to be for their offense.
Impact: Rudolph has 1,055 yards and 15 touchdowns over his three-year NFL career. Jimmy Graham exceeded both of those totals last season for New Orleans, and Rob Gronkowski did the same three years ago for New England.

News: Early on in training camp, the trio of Bridgewater, Matt Cassel, and Christian Ponder have shared the Vikings' QB reps, NFL.com reports. "These first four days, we've worked three groups," offensive coordinator Norv Turner noted Monday. "Matt's gotten a little bit more, Teddy's gotten about a third and Ponder's gotten about a third. We have the day off [Tuesday], and we'll adjust that, probably getting more half and half."
Impact: Assuming the reps are split two ways Wednesday, as Turner suggests, they will likely be divided between Bridgewater and Cassel. While Cassel's candidacy to earn the Vikings' starting QB assignment is buoyed by his NFL experience, the fact that practice reps are already in line to be divided at this stage of the game suggests that Bridgewater is in a viable position to mount a challenge to overtake his veteran counterparts with a strong preseason.

News: Peterson (groin) may not see game action until the regular season, NFL.com reports.
Impact: The report notes that coach Mike Zimmer suggested to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport that Peterson -- who participated in Sunday's padded practice, and thus appears past an offseason groin procedure -- has nothing to prove in preseason action. That said, Zimmer conceded that if Peterson really wants to play, the star running back could conceivably be granted very limited exhibition game touches, but nothing more than that.

News: Patterson, who injured his left foot while training in California last week, was spotted jogging around during Sunday morning's walk-through, Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.
Impact: Meanwhile, coach Mike Zimmer noted that Patterson will "probably stay with the walk-throughs for maybe another day," suggesting that the wideout remains in the day-to-day category for now. Once he's up to speed, Patterson's potential to emerge as a big-play threat in the Minnesota offense makes him a fantasy breakout candidate in his second season as a pro.

News: The Minnesota Vikings have signed tight end Kyle Rudolph to a five-year contract extension. The Vikings announced the deal Sunday night. The deal, which was first reported by Fox Sports, is worth $36.5 million with just $20 million guaranteed. Incentives can push the deal to $40 million.
Impact: Rudolph missed eight games because of a broken left foot last season. He caught 30 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns last year, but was still named to the Pro Bowl and earned MVP honors in the game.

News: Rudolph agreed to a five-year, $36.5 million contract extension with the Vikings, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Impact: Rudolph's deal can be worth up to $40 million with incentives and bonuses. Rudolph was limited to eight games last year, after suffering a season-ending broken foot in Week 9. However, he could be a bigger part of this year's offense, since new Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner has had success with making tight ends a big part of the passing game. This contract extension may be an acknowledgement of his rising profile in the offense.

News: Joseph (shoulder) practiced without restrictions Friday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Impact: He's coming back from offseason surgery in January to repair a partly torn labrum in his right shoulder. Joseph will start at nose tackle where he's been a steady tackler and can pressure the quarterback, as he's averaged 55.7 tackles per season while also recording nine sacks in the last three years.

News: Munnerlyn (hamstring) was placed on the PUP list to begin training camp, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "I doubt it will be very long," head coach Mike Zimmer said.
Impact: It's likely a minor injury and the veteran doesn't need as much practice time early in camp.

News: Patterson is day-to-day with a foot injury.
Impact: He was held out of practice Friday, and the while the injury is considered minor, it's definitely something owners should keep an eye on until he is back on the practice field.

News: The Vikings cut Cooper (undisclosed) with a non-football injury designation Friday, Baltimore Sun writer Aaron Wilson reports.
Impact: It's not clear what Cooper's injury issue might be, but he likely wouldn't have amounted to more than a camp body with the Vikings, anyway.

News: Ford will miss the preseason due to a broken left foot, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Impact: Ford, who underwent surgery earlier this week in order to have a screw placed in his foot, expects to be back "around the start of the season." Upon his return, Ford -- who caught 11 passes for 133 yards in nine games last season -- will re-enter the Vikings' depth tight end mix behind Kyle Rudolph.

News: Cassel enters training camp as the leader in the quarterback competition, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. "In my mind I have Cassel as the No. 1 quarterback going into camp. I don't have a starter in mind yet," Zimmer told ESPN 1500 am Twin Cities. "[The players] are going to determine who the starter is on the practice field about how they go about their business, how they perform in the preseason games. I understand the quarterback's a big situation."
Impact: Zimmer left it open that rookie Teddy Bridgewater could win the job, but Cassel enters the competition with a slight lead. There's been a lot of media speculation on the job battle in recent days and trying to find hidden meaning in the comments of Zimmer and offense coordinator Norv Turner, but the competition will ultimately play out this preseason.

News: The Minnesota Vikings have waived Nealy and signed tight end Mike Higgins.
Impact: The NFL announced two weeks ago that Nealy will be suspended for the first four games of the season for violating rules against performance-enhancing drugs. He was a member of the practice squad for six weeks last year. In a statement distributed by the NFL Players Association after the punishment was revealed, Nealy said he took a supplement with a banned stimulant and that he took responsibility for his action.

News: Jarius Wright took most of the first team reps at slot receiver in spring practices and is seen in a battle with Simpson for the job, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Impact: Simpson worked mostly with the second team, according to the report, but it's also possible he could win a role as a deep threat in addition to use in the slot. It's also worth noting that there's a possibility that Simpson may face NFL discipline stemming from his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving last November.

Nealy says he took a supplement with a banned stimulant. He says he takes responsibility for his actions and apologized to the organization and fans for the suspension.
