With Cousins on franchise tag, Redskins draft QB Sudfeld

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) The Washington Redskins selected Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld in the sixth round of the NFL draft.

With Kirk Cousins signed for only next season with the franchise tag, the Redskins used the 187th overall pick on the 6-foot-6, 234-pound Sudfeld, who will likely be their third quarterback and be given time to develop.

Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan said a team can ''never (have) too many quarterbacks.'' The 23-year-old Sudfeld completed 60 percent of his passes for 3,573 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season with the Hoosiers.

Washington's quarterback depth chart now includes Cousins, Colt McCoy and Sudfeld.

Earlier on the final day of the draft, the Redskins traded down and selected Temple defensive lineman Matt Ioannidis 152nd overall. They used the fifth-round pick they got from the New Orleans Saints to bulk up on the defensive line, an area that was considered a major need going into the draft.

Ioannidis was a versatile lineman at Temple, playing inside, outside and in many situations.

''I've played all around the D-line,'' Ioannidis said on a conference call Saturday. ''I would just say I'm a relentless, tough player who's going to bring a lot to the table.''

Ioannidis was the 26th defensive lineman taken in a deep class. When the Redskins were on the clock in the fourth round with the 120th overall pick, they traded it to the Saints, who selected defensive lineman David Onyemata from the University of Manitoba.

The 6-3, 299-pound Ioannidis was a first-team all-American Athletic Conference selection last season for Temple when he had 39 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks.

''Matt transformed into a great leader for us,'' Temple coach Matt Rhule said. ''He learned the history of success that Temple had at the defensive line position and made himself into one of the best that's ever played here.''

Ioannidis will play a role in replacing former Temple lineman Terrance Knighton, who left Washington to sign with the New England Patriots. He was the third defensive pick for the Redskins at this draft but had a long wait because of the defensive-line depth available.

''I knew this was a great class going in,'' Ioannidis said. ''Everyone's been saying that. I just took it upon myself to be patient and wait for my time to be called. I tried not to stress it and put too much emphasis on it because I knew good things were coming, honestly.''

Washington got the 152nd pick and a fifth-rounder in 2017 from the Saints. It also traded the 158th pick to the New York Jets for a fourth-rounder in 2017.

The Redskins currently have nine picks in the 2017 draft.
