Vikings adding $19M to stadium project to add 'crucial' features
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Vikings are spending another $19.7 million for their new stadium to make sure it has the features they want.
The team said Friday the new money will guarantee "crucial" features such as massive pivoting glass doors. The Vikings say their contribution now stands at $525.6 million, a little more than half of the roughly billion-dollar project. Taxpayers are paying the rest.
Rising steel costs have pushed the overall price tag to $1.023 billion.
The Vikings and the stadium authority also announced that SMG has signed a 10-year deal to operate the stadium. SMG already runs NFL stadiums in Chicago, New Orleans, Houston and Jacksonville.
The new stadium is due to open in 2016. The Vikings are playing outdoors at the University of Minnesota until then.
