Titans looking for a bulkier Bishop Sankey

The Tennessee Titans are hoping some time spent in the weight room will result in a breakout season for second-year running back Bishop Sankey.

According to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, head coach Ken Whisenhunt would like to see Sankey play at a heavier weight than he did his rookie season. The former-second round pick ran for 569 yards and two touchdowns in 2014, at a playing weight of 209 pounds.

Whisenhunt believes having a full offseason to work with the Titans' coaching stay will benefit Sankey as well.

"We want him a little bit heavier, and just knowing the game (should help),'' Whisenhunt said, via Wyatt. "I think knowing our plan and knowing our offense. … He was playing catchup (last year) and it's hard to do that when you are thrown into the wolves per se in camp, and he just never seemed to really catch up. He has been working from Day One not only on the physical part of it but the mental part of it as well."

The coach said Tuesday he'd like to see the former University of Washington standout gain between five to seven pounds by Week 1.

"We'd like him in the 215 to 220 range,'' Whisenhunt said. "I just feel like as far as having some thump in the A-gap when he has protection or being able to get extra yards on a carry, I think that can help him."

Sankey figures to split carries with rookie David Cobb as the Titans' primary backs this season.
