49ers shuffle backfield with signing of Cadet and release of Thomas

Pierre Thomas' tenure with the San Francisco 49ers lasted one week as the team cut the veteran running back on Tuesday to open a roster spot for the signing of Travaris Cadet.

Cadet, who was a teammate of Thomas last season with the New Orleans Saints, made the New England Patriots out of training camp but was released after catching one pass for two yards in the season opener.

An undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State, Cadet had only 10 rushes for 32 yards with New Orleans last season, but he was a pass-catching threat out of the backfield with 38 receptions for 296 yards and a touchdown.

Thomas was signed by the 49ers last Tuesday due to injuries to leading rusher Carlos Hyde and backups Reggie Bush and Mike Davis. He had four carries for 12 yards in Sunday's win over Atlanta, but backfield mates Shaun Draughn and Kendall Gaskins saw the bulk of the action down the stretch.
