Ryan Fitzpatrick is reportedly playing for his job vs. Steelers on Sunday

The New York Jets are sitting at 1-3, and things aren’t going to get any easier when they pay the 3-1 Pittsburgh Steelers a visit on Sunday. Ryan Fitzpatrick has played a huge role in the Jets’ horrendous start, throwing 10 interceptions in the first four games.

It’s been a nightmarish season for Fitzpatrick and the Jets, but it could be coming to an end fairly soon. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS, Fitzpatrick is playing for his job on Sunday, meaning he could be benched with another terrible outing.

The past two weeks have been especially rough as Fitzpatrick has thrown nine interceptions and just one touchdown pass. The Jets lost those games by a combined score of 51-20, and the season could quickly get away from them with the Steelers and Cardinals up next on the schedule.

Geno Smith is waiting in the wings, and while he’s not a particularly enticing option, he likely wouldn’t turn the ball over as much as Fitzpatrick has in recent weeks. Head coach Todd Bowles has seemingly become frustrated with Fitzpatrick’s poor play of late.

He had this to say recently, via the New York Daily News:

“He can’t put the game on his shoulders and try to be Superman,” Bowles said of Fitzpatrick. “If it’s not there, it’s not there. Whether we take the sack or we throw it out of bounds or we punt and move on, ball security is what wins in this league.

Bowles has stood by Fitzpatrick through all of this, saying he gives the Jets the best chance to win, but that’s hard to believe given their terrible start. Should the Jets fall to 1-4 after a loos on Sunday, a run at the playoffs would be increasingly unlikely.

Beyond Smith, the Jets don’t have any viable options to start. Bryce Petty isn’t ready to be a No. 1 quarterback in the NFL, and rookie Christian Hackenberg is even further behind than he is. As crazy as it sounds, the Jets could be looking towards Smith to be their savior.
