Richard Sherman calls apology from Dan Carpenter's wife 'BS'

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman was unimpressed Wednesday by Kaela Carpenter’s apology for a short-sighted tweet.

Carpenter, the wife of Bills kicker Dan Carpenter, implied that Sherman should be castrated for what she believed to be a dirty hit on her husband during Monday night’s game, on a play that affected the outcome of the game. Her comments took on a racist undertone, pertaining to farms and slavery.

“It's not surprising at all,” Sherman told reporters Wednesday of her comments. “This is a day and age, you've got the Ku Klux Klan running around. People say whatever they want, and there's very little consequence. For her to say something like that and then have a BS apology like she did, it's just the way of the world. I don't let it bother me. It's something I'm very used to. It's just the way people are, the way people were raised.”

Sherman originally responded with a brief “Thank you! Have a great day.”

“My attempt at humor during a heated and highly controversial NFL game has not been received the way I intended,” Carpenter wrote in her apology, posted to Twitter after the first message was deleted. “When I saw the out of control nature of the events that happened on the field, I jokingly wanted to relate it to life on the farm, where I grew up, and how it would have been handled there. Unfortunately, I did not realize that a tone of racism would dominate the response to what I intended to be a lighthearted defense of my husband. Regardless of the narrative that has been attached to my post, it was never intended to be related to race, or the disgusting hatred that creates the basis for racism.”

“It's more disappointing than anything,” Sherman added Wednesday. “But it's also something that's understandable. Ignorance has always been in this world. The core of this country has been built off of slavery and people owning people. So any time you understand that's the core principles of the way the nation is built, then you've got to have some kind of sympathy for it.”

Asked about Tuesday’s election results, Sherman said he wasn’t surprised with the outcome, a win for Donald Trump, noting that it “helped people show their true colors.”
