Rex Ryan: Not sure if Watkins will play, McCoy doubtful

The Buffalo Bills have jumped out as an early-season surprise team, but they might take on the New York Giants without two offensive stars.

According to Tyler Dunne of The Buffalo News, Buffalo coach Rex Ryan said wide receiver Sammy Watkins might not play, and running back LeSean McCoy’s prospects aren’t great, either.

Fortunately for the Bills, New York is an optimal opponent to face when the offense is short-handed.

McCoy is the headliner of the backfield, but backup running back Karlos Williams fits the identity of the Buffalo offense. The rookie has tacked up 186 yards and three touchdowns on just 24 attempts. He even ripped off a 41-yard score on his final carry of the game.

Watkins’ potential absence is a slightly larger problem, but Tyrod Taylor effectively spread the ball to Charles Clay, Percy Harvin and Robert Woods against the Miami Dolphins.

New York has allowed 410 yards per game, which ranks second-worst in the league. Additionally, the Giants will likely have trouble containing Buffalo’s stingy defensive line.

Of all games for Shady and Watkins to miss, the Sunday matinee (1 p.m. ET, FOX) isn’t a worst-case scenario for the emerging Bills.
