Report: Colts unlikely to purse Evan Mathis
Pro Bowl offensive guard Evan Mathis is searching for a new home after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Indianapolis Colts, led by former Eagles executive Ryan Grigson, have questions along the offensive line and Super Bowl aspirations. But even with a potential fit in Indianapolis, a report says not to expect the team to purse the 33-year-old Mathis.
According to Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star, the Colts are unlikely to make a push to sign Mathis.
With the team heavily invested in veterans like wide receiver Andre Johnson, running back Frank Gore and offensive lineman Todd Herremans, the Colts are said to be reluctant to add another experienced player to the mix. Gore, Johnson and Herremans, who are all in their 30s, aren't long-term answers in Indianapolis. The team reportedly doesn't want to add to the eventual transition they face in a replacing them by adding another veteran to the mix.
Additionally, Holder notes the Colts have a group of young offensive linemen, including Hugh Thornton, Khaled Holmes and Jack Mewhort, among others, that they want to develop. The goal is to groom a group of lineman that will protect quarterback Andrew Luck over the long term. Bringing in Mathis, while potentially helpful for this season, may prevent that from happening.
So while Mathis figures to have plenty of teams interested in his services, the Colts don't appear to be one of them.
