Ray Rice rally set for New Rochelle on Tuesday night

Published Sep. 16, 2014 4:30 p.m. ET

Ray Rice’s hometown of New Rochelle is rallying in support of the beleaguered alumnus.

A “Night of Prayer” will be held for Rice for 7 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Catherine AME Zion Church located at 19 Lincoln Avenue, New Rochelle, according to a report.

The event’s organizer, Bishop Feston Leak, said that this event will be a rallying cry for Rice and his family.

"This is a night of prayer," Leak told Talk of the Sound. "We will not be talking about the issues."

Last week, Rice was released by the Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL  after a video tape was leaked that showed him striking now-wife Janay Rice in a casino elevator. Rice had previously been suspended two games by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell after an initial video was released following the February incident, but the public outcry grew too strong after footage reached the public.

In addition, Rice on Saturday visited New Rochelle High School’s football team and former coach Lou DiRienzo welcome back Rice to the game.

DiRienzo said Rice didn’t address the team, but added: “Ray is a part of this family. ... I’m very happy he’s here today. He made a very terrible mistake. But I know the character of the man. He will rise from this. The mistake he made will be erased by the good deeds he will continue to do.”

DiReienzo also said that Rice has made one mistake in his life, but while at New Rochelle, Rice had been disciplined for an incident involving a BB Gun Pistol, according to another report. The report said the New Rochelle Board of Education and Policy classifies BB Gun Pistol as a deadly weapon.
