The New York Jets finally broke their four-game losing streak and defeated the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7 by the score of 24-16. From the first snap of the game to the final whistle, the Jets had controlled the time of possession battle and wore out the beat up Ravens. It was like night and day for this team from what they have looked like these past few weeks.

With this win, the Jets are now 2-5 and can rest up for the week and get ready to face the Cleveland Browns. In this game, there were many improvements but they still have mistakes to work on. It was a small step for them to improve as a team. They will look to continue to build on this victory and try to save their season.

This is a great opportunity for the Jets to finish the first half of the season with a 500 record. Let’s take a deeper look and break down the top five takeaways from this Week 7 contest.

5. Ryan Fitzpatrick actually impresses for a change

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was finally able to lead his team to a victory with a good performance. He was very careful with the football and was making smart decisions.

Fitzpatrick was able to go for 9 for 14 in passing and threw for 120 yards. The big thing that he didn’t do is he didn’t throw any interceptions.

He finished with an 115.2 quarterback rating which is impressive because he has been in the double digits. Fitzpatrick was able to mark smart decisions with the football and made the Ravens defense frustrated.

He will need to build on this performance because the next few weeks will decide the faith of his Jets career. Fitzpatrick will have to do the same performance next week when they head back on the road and face the Browns.

The offense kept the ball for a great amount of time and kept the defense relaxed. They had the ball for 36 minutes and 37 seconds which is a 13 minute and 14-second difference from the Ravens which they had the ball for 23 minutes and 23 seconds.

4. Jets defensive front line steps up in a huge way

After struggling the past few weeks, the Jets defense stepped up in a big way. They were able to key defensive stops and set the rhythm from start to finish.

With putting pressure on quarterback Joe Flacco, a lot the defense caused him to throw multiple interceptions. The defense only gave up six total yards in rushing, and 239 total yards in passing.

They improved big time in the second half and made the correct adjustments which are very impressive. They finally stepped up and delivered a complete performance for the most part.

The one quarterback sack they had caused the Ravens drive to be stalled. They need to use their speed and agility because they could cause major problems against any opponent in the NFL.

3. Wide receivers show up in a big way

The Jets wide receiver corps of Quincy Enunwa, Robby Anderson, and Charone Peake showed up when their numbers were called.  These three players combined to total up to 154 yards of the 344 yards in total offense.

Enunwa and rookie receiver Anderson were quiet these past few weeks and Sunday they rose to the occasion. They both had big plays as Enunwa had a 69-yard touchdown pass and Anderson had a 28-yard catch that helped move the football.

Peake still has a long way to go in being trusted but he made a big catch to also keep the momentum going. If they are able to continue this success, then they will have a much better offense.

They need to be as physical these next few weeks because these next few opponents are amongst the worst. It is time for the receivers to step up and become an elite group of players.

2. Commitment to the running game

It has been like night and day in how the running game has been producing for the Jets. Running back Matt Forte had 30 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown.

He was very effective throughout the game and the running holes opened up quicker. Forte looked like his old self when he was being physical and gaining major yardage for how smart he was with the football.

Forte is a more efficient runner as he is a big running back who can plow through defenders. If he is able to do this every game then he is a player that could help the offense out even more.

They need to establish this type of game plan because it will allow the defense to be fresh and dominate. If they can continue this type of play, then it will help out the passing game of the Jets to be effective as well.

1. A defensive secondary finally delivering

For the past couple of weeks, the Jets secondary was getting beaten up and Sunday was a different story. The Jets secondary was able to produce two interceptions that were big drive stoppers.

They made the tackles and had the help when they needed it. This is what a complete team effort should look like on defense. Everyone was talking and being physical in the second half.

In the second half, the Ravens were having a lot of trouble of getting open which was good to see. They played more of a bump and run and made it difficult for the Ravens receivers to get open.

It was good to see that the whole defense from the front line and secondary to produce big time. This could be a building stone in how the team should produce for the rest of the season.
