Report: Plaxico to work out for Pats
New England is leaving no stone unturned in its search for the perfect wide receiving corps.
The Patriots, who already have a wealth of talent at the receiver position, have invited former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress to fly in for a workout, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The Patriots already have plenty of help at wide receiver, including proven veterans Wes Welker and Deion Branch, Patriots retreads Donte Stallworth and Jabar Gaffney, and newcomer Brandon Lloyd. New England also gets a good deal of production from its tight ends, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. But the Patriots haven't been shy about looking into other potential receivers throughout the offseason and training camp, although few have been picked up by the team for the long run.
Burress' main connection to the Patriots is his role in the Giants' comeback win over New England in Super Bowl XLII. The receiver's career was derailed soon after, though, when a gun he was carrying in a night club accidentally went off, firing into his leg. As the court case over the gun charge went on, Burress was cut by the Giants.
Burress played for the New York Jets last season but has had no offers in the offseason as a free agent. Although a highly talented player, Burress has been considered a liability both for his off-field problems and for his sometimes divisive nature within teams.
Burress has 550 career receptions for 8,457 yards and 63 touchdowns over five seasons with the Steelers, four with the Giants and one with the Jets.
