OC Frank Reich focused on improving the Chargers run game

Published May. 28, 2015 11:26 p.m. ET

Frank Reich knows why his offense struggled to run the ball like it did.

But heading into 2015, the second-year offensive coordinator is just happy he was given the tools to fix the issue.

"I’m just thankful that (president of football operations) John Spanos and (Chargers GM) Tom (Telesco) and Mike (McCoy) got us a guy like Melvin Gordon, and added some players to the offensive line," Reich told Dan Sileo of The Mighty 1090 AM radio. "There’s no question we need, want and will run the ball better this year."

Anything over 3.4 yards-per-carry will do. That's what the Chargers averaged last season, and it was the second-worst output in the entire league.

Reich said the addition of Gordon and others will help not just Philip Rivers, but the Bolts' defense too. Gordon needs to learn how to be an NFL runner first, and not just a "superior athlete" like he was at Wisconsin, in order for change to come.

Still, Chargers fans have to be excited for more balance in 2015. Reich sure is.

"It will just get us back on track," he said. "Last year we were poor in the running game. We know that. We own it. And we’re committed to changing that this year."
