NFL roundup: Jay Cutler expected to miss 2-3 weeks

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Chicago Bears will be without quarterback Jay Cutler for the next few weeks, creating an opportunity for Brian Hoyer.

On Monday Night Football, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler injured the thumb on his throwing hand. The signal-caller had just thrown an interception, which would be the last pass of his night. Former Houston Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer replaced Cutler, who left the field to boos from the Soldier Field faithful. Chicago will have to go with Hoyer for the next few weeks, as Cutler is out with a sprained thumb.

The New England Patriots may finally get Rob Gronkowski back in Week 3, as the star tight end was limited in practice on Tuesday. Gronkowski has missed the first two games of the season, and as the Patriots are down to their third quarterback, getting him back would be huge for the 2-0 Pats. As it stands, New England will face the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football with rookie Jacoby Brissett under center.

Despite the fact that all of his protests have been of the peaceful variety, San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been receiving death threats. Kaepernick has brought light to social injustice in American by refusing to stand for the national anthem. He’s since been followed by other players, but that hasn’t stopped people from all over the country from letting the embattled quarterback know exactly how the feel. Amazingly, Kaepernick neglected to tell the 49ers security staff because he figured death threats were coming.

The Oakland Raiders may stay in Oakland after all, after a report stated that a group is planning to buy the Oakland Coliseum. The group is led by Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, a former star defensive back for the organization. The Raiders currently have their sights set on Las Vegas for their new home, as they have been trying to get a new stadium for eight years. Oakland currently shares the O.com Coliseum with the Oakland A’s of Major League Baseball.

Free agent running back C.J. Spiller, who was cut by the New Orleans Saints after Week 1, could find himself as a member of the Green Bay Packers very soon. Spiller met with Green Bay on Tuesday, and could provide an instant boost to their suddenly stagnant offense. Spiller’s time in New Orleans was not what either side expected, so a new beginning in Green Bay may be just what he needs to kickstart his career.
