Packers are reportedly trying to steal Matt Forte from the Bears

The Green Bay Packers need to add depth at the running back position and could find it in former Bears All-Pro running back Matt Forte.

According to Adam Schefter, the Packers have expressed interest in the former division rival turned free agent, early in the NFL free agent negotiating period.

Forte has consistently been one of the best backs in the NFL and no team has been more exposed to his versatility than the Packers. The two-time Pro Bowler has topped 100 all-purpose yards in six of the last 10 meetings between the teams dating back 2010 and is just two seasons removed from breaking the NFL single-season record for receptions by a running back.

Adding that type of talent in an offensive backfield that already features one of the league's best quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers could do wonders for a team that still isn't sure if they can rely on 2013 offensive rookie of the year Eddie Lacy.

Lacy's struggles during the 2015 season are well documented. He posted career lows in attempts (187), touchdowns (3) and fumbled four times during a season in which he lost his starting spot to James Starks, who had one of his best seasons to date in a Packers uniform. Starks, however, is appears to be joining fan favorite John Kuhn in the free agency market this offseason.

It's not Ted Thompson's style to spend or add big names in free agency, but Forte fits the bill of former All-Pros Thompson has added to the roster that many thought to be on their last leg. Charles Woodson was signed late in the free agency period in 2006 and just two seasons ago Thompson took a shot on Julius Peppers, who earned yet another Pro Bowl berth this season.

Only time will tell how things shake out between Green Bay and Forte, but with two key contributors potentially leaving in free agency and uncertainty with Lacy, look for the Packers to add another running back one way or another.
