Todd Bowles blames Jets' embarrassing loss on 'bonehead mistakes,' not effort

Monday night’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts was one of the most embarrassing for the New York Jets in recent memory. The 41-10 blowout easily could have been even worse if not for a bizarre fumble on the goal line, but a 31-point margin of defeat is bad enough for a coach on the hot seat.

Todd Bowles was less than pleased with his team following the loss, and understandably so. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick played like his old, bad self, Bryce Petty wasn’t much better in relief, and the defense’s effort was noticeably lacking. To Bowles, though, that effort looked just fine.

“Actually, I thought the effort was a lot better, but I thought we made some bonehead mistakes that cost us,” he said, via Newsday.

Bowles expanded on his referenced “bonehead mistakes” a bit but didn’t go into much detail at all. Instead, he said there were too many to list.

“Probably too many to mention, because there was a lot of people that made them, whether it was offense or defense or on special teams. We had busts that we normally don’t have, and there were certain things that we didn’t execute. We didn’t execute at all.”

So, where do the Jets go from here? Well, there’s no place to go but up. At 3-9 and out of playoff contention, New York is simply playing for pride, and for a little bit of hope ahead of 2017.

With a roster that’s filled with overpaid veterans, underperformers and three quarterbacks incapable of playing well enough to retain the starting job, the Jets are a mess. Bowles has been stubborn when it comes to shaking things up, and he’ll likely remain as such down the stretch.

“(Changes) will be discussed, but I don’t know if we’ll (make) them,” he said.
