Todd Bowles makes players run laps for talking about Smith incident

Published Aug. 24, 2015 4:53 p.m. ET

The Geno Smith-IK Enemkpali incident has yet to stray from headlines in the media, but Todd Bowles is making sure that his team stays away from the sore subject.

Talking about the punch that sidelined the team's starting quarterback for the first four regular season games won't get you very far in Bowles' book.

In fact, it'll get you in better shape by way of running laps in practice.

According to Brandon Marshall, Bowles has set a rule regarding the punch: If you talk about it, you run laps. Marshall revealed the punishment on the Rich Eisen Show on Monday.

For the Jets, nothing good can come from talking about it. It was a devastating blow to the team -- one that may have a huge impact on their postseason hopes.

On the same day that Marshall shared the punishment with the world, Smith returned to the practice field for the first time since the incident. He was in a red jersey (so not to get punched again) and without a helmet. He stretched with the team early on in practice, but was mainly with trainers and in team meetings for the rest of the day.
