"I think you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill, to be honest with you," Ryan told ESPN a day after Idzik refused to say Ryan would have final say in naming a starting quarterback. "Because ever since I've been here, this is my fifth year here, not one decision has ever been made by one man. Not one decision and that's whether it's who's up, who is active, who's going to be the starter at this and this, who we draft. It's always a group effort on what is best for this team."

Idzik said that the starting QB decision — which centers on rookie Geno Smith and veteran Mark Sanchez — would be a group effort. Sanchez is returning after an awful 2012 campaign in which he threw 18 interceptions and compiled a QB rating of 66.9. Those numbers prompted numerous trade rumors, but New York decided to retain the former No. 5 overall pick.

Smith, who was expected to be a first-round pick in last April’s NFL Draft, fell to the second round, where the Jets took him with the 39th overall pick.

Ryan is on the hot seat after the Jets missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season last year. The Jets opted to fire GM Mike Tannenbaum after the disappointing season.
