Jets name QB Bryce Petty starter for rest of season

New York Jets head coach Tood Bowles said the team will start Bryce Petty at quarterback for the final four games of the season.

The Jets were routed on Monday night 41–10 by the Indianapolis Colts, a game in which Jets starter Ryan Fitzpatrick was benched after completing 5 of 12 for 81 yards with one interception.

Petty finished 11 of 25 for 135 yards with a touchdown and was intercepted twice.

"I thought they kicked our asses," Bowles said. "It's very troubling when you get your ass kicked. The plan was to start him the last four games, anyway," Bowles said. "So, we just started a half early."

“It’s the last quarter of the season, we’re out. Like I said before, that’s the time slot we had for him,” Bowles added. “That’s the time we can take a good look at him and see if he grows any. That was my decision.”

New York gave up 421 total yards to the Colts, turned the ball over three times and went 3–11 on third down.

The Jets (3–9) will miss the playoffs for the sixth straight season. Petty will make his second career start on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.
