Minnesota Vikings asked a lot of CB Trae Waynes during offseason workouts

It may appear as though the Minnesota Vikings are bringing rookie cornerback Trae Waynes along slowly, as the 11th-overall pick worked mostly with the second team during offseason workouts. In reality, the Vikings are giving Waynes all that he can handle, according to Andrew Krammer of 1500ESPN.com.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer provided an update on Waynes' progress to date, detailing the team's plan to familiarize him with multiple coverage concepts.

"We're asking him to do a lot of different positions, play a lot of different coverages that he didn't have to do in the rookie minicamp," Zimmer told 1500ESPN.com. "I think he's starting to understand things better. Because we are playing him in a few different places. He's still sometimes unsure of what he's supposed to do and where he's supposed to be at, but I like him."

Defensive coordinator George Edwards also mentioned the sizable workload the coaching staff has given Waynes, telling 1500ESPN.com that the Vikings "put a lot on his plate" early on to gauge how much he can handle out of the gates. So far, so good.

"We like where he's at right now," Edwards said, per 1500ESPN.com.

Waynes, a Michigan State product, was the first cornerback selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, so Minnesota fans naturally have big expectations for him.
