Miami Dolphins offensive recap Vs 49ers week 12

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The winning streak grows to six games for the Miami Dolphins as they beat a 49ers team that is playing better than their record would indicate and did so without three of their own starting offensive linemen.

It took until the last six minutes of the game last week before the passing game would kick in with the proper protection from this makeshift offensive line. After a week of practice that pass protection was readily available right off the bat. However on the other side of things the push from that line needed on running plays is lacking and it shows in the stats. Ryan Tannehill nearly had as many running yards as Jay Ajayi with 34 and 45 yards respectively, while Kenyan Drake and Damien Williams only had one attempt each both running slightly less than ten yards each.

Head coach Adam Gase has stated after the game that the 49ers were daring him to pass and he obliged. Ryan Tannehill passed for three touchdowns and 285 yards that where equally distributed gaining him a passer rating of 130.6 as he kept a handle on the football throughout the game. He has been playing good football lately and deserves the accolades. A review of the last game will show Tannehill throwing into some tight windows and even more so this game.

On some of the six running plays that Tannehill took off on they were cringe worthy as he did get bashed hard. Backup quarterback Matt Moore had words for him after one instance and must have giving the advice to take a slide on those plays and rightly so. There was one roll out right play Ryan Tannehill evaded what looked like a sure sack situation from the left side and ended up gaining six yards on the run and just about getting a first down.

An interesting ongoing stat for the Miami Dolphins have been scoring more in the second half of games, whether it is by design or from good halftime adjustments is not certain. It took place again this game with three more points being scored in the second half.

There might have been even more scoring this game if not for some (not a lot) of dropped passes and DeVante Parker’s propensity of sticking his hand out to land coming down with the ball as he did in the corner of the end zone which negated a touchdown pass. Not to put all the blame on him but the team should work out something where he is landing with his lower body, the buttocks on the ground with the ball are as good as two feet and might even be easier on his back which he hurt making the same type of play on the sideline while going up an incredible amount to get the catch and landing as he did again. Break your fall with the lower body then put your hand out would be ideal.

A good sign this game was after the great effort by DeVante Parker to stretch out and bring in the 46 yard pass, the Dolphins went right back and struck with the hot iron attempting a deep pass down the left sideline that went incomplete. In past games this was Gase’s calling card to go uptempo and catch the other team off guard right after a big play, this might be an indicator of going back to this technique as it did appear to be effective. If you can burn the opponent with something then keep that torch lit.

Dion Sims had a great catch holding on to the ball taking a big hit propelling him into the end zone for a score. He also allowed a sack on a missed block again however he has been taking every snap the last few games and even some special teams duty so it can almost be expected as he is helping fill the void from the missing starters on the offensive line.

Ryan Tannehill has the best QB week 12 rating on offense from profootballfocus.

“Quarterback: Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins, 92.8

Ryan Tannehill had his second excellent performance in three weeks for Miami, leading the Dolphins to their sixth-straight win. He completed 66.7 percent of his passes against the 49ers and that’s with three of his ten incompletions coming from dropped balls by his receivers. He was pressured only eight times in the game and from a clean pocket he had a passer rating of 150.3.”

Incredible effort from DeVante Parker to get the ball sacrificing his body. You see this Mike Wallace? Pro receivers have whats know as a catching radius.

A nice pitch out to Jay Ajayi who beats his man to score the TD. A sign of things to come if the line doesn’t get the starters back? Jay Ajayi also caught a nice pass thrown in a tight window keeping a drive alive on third down.

Holding and touching play diagram: Ajayi stepped OB then back in before attempting a catch and Bushrod held on a failed passing play, this needs to be cleaned up although there were not many penalties overall.

    Game notes

•No NFL QB has more games w a 50+ yard completion this season than Ryan Tannehill with six (he had his longest pass for 46 yards to DeVante Parker this game)

•The great TD pass to Dion Sims marked the 100th thrown by Ryan Tannehill for his career.

•Leonte Carroo was called into action due to a DeVante Parker injury. He made the best of it scoring his first TD impressively carrying a defender along the way.

    Last words

There have been a lot of injuries holding back the offense particularly on the line but despite of that there are signs of growth. After seeing a running game so dominate it is now on life support and Adam Gase is performing the heart transplant needed until the starters come back on the offensive line. When it improves so will the overall game but doing what is needed can also win games. There are no style points next to the win column.
