Report: Jim Schwartz turns down Dolphins' defensive coordinator offer

Published Oct. 6, 2015 3:50 p.m. ET

When the Miami Dolphins tapped Dan Campbell as the interim head coach following Joe Philbin's firing, he was given the power to make decisions regarding his coaching staff.

The first move by Campbell? Offer the defensive coordinator job to former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Schwartz declined the offer, but it's telling of Kevin Coyle's future in Miami.

If Campbell is already offering Coyle's job to outside parties, he's not likely to stick around for long as the defensive coordinator. Additionally, there are reports that a decision on whether or not to keep Coyle could come as soon as Tuesday.

Coyle's tenure in Miami looks like it may be coming to an end sooner rather than later as the team will probably choose to go a different direction. The Dolphins have plenty of talent on defense, it could just be a matter of finding the right coordinator to lead them.
