Miami had several linebackers at their facility on Tuesday for a workout including former Packer A.J. Hawk. The Dolphins liked what they saw in Donald Butler and signed him to a contract.

Drafted in the 3rd round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers, Butler began his career playing quite well leading the teams linebackers in tackles in his 2nd season.

Butler missed his first season due to an Achille’s injury. Throughout his career with the Chargers, Butler was one of the top vocal leaders on the defensive unit. In 2014 he signed a multi-year deal but heading into this past off-season, Butler was released.

The Arizona Cardinals added him to their roster in July but Butler could not make the final 53 and was released.

Donald Butler has five years of starting experience making 62 starts in his 71 games played but he has also missed time due to injuries. In 2014 he missed time with a dislocated elbow.

The Dolphins are hoping Butler can provide them with veteran depth at a weak position.

Miami did not have to make a roster move to slide Butler onto the roster. The team announced that Earl Mitchell has been placed on IR with the hopes he can return in six weeks. In his place the Dolphins will rely more heavily on Jordan Phillips.
