Report: L.A.-area venues wary of temporarily hosting NFL teams

Published Aug. 4, 2015 3:06 p.m. ET

The San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams have each been connected to rumors of relocation, but Los Angeles-area venues aren’t rushing to open their doors for the NFL teams.

According to Nathan Fenno and Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times, “the NFL has had various difficulties lining up potential temporary venues” for the franchises while a new stadium is potentially built.

Per the report:

“With a key date approaching Wednesday, only the Coliseum has publicly expressed interest in hosting a team. When it contacted five area venues in June, the NFL asked that proposal requests be submitted by Aug. 5.”

Fenno and Farmer note the Anschutz Entertainment Group (StubHub Center) and Rose Bowl Operating Co. (Rose Bowl) are not interested in offering their respective venues.

Consequent to the lack of interest, Eric Grubman, the NFL senior vice president, said “more complex opportunities” could become a reality.

Translation? Baseball stadiums.

More specifically, the homes of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels. But according to Fenno and Farmer, neither management group will “participate in the traditional proposal request process” because of the possibility of postseason baseball causing schedule conflicts.

Although an NFL franchise moving to the City of Angels is essentially a foregone conclusion, the league has a notably large hurdle it still must overcome.
