Jordan Reed Officially Diagnosed With A Concussion
Jordan Reed suffered a concussion at some point this week. As a result, the Washington Redskins star will likely be forced to miss Week 6.
On Thursday, the Washington Redskins officially got word that Jordan Reed had suffered a concussion. Reed had reportedly been suffering from concussion-like symptoms on Tuesday and got checked out Wednesday. The team and Jay Gruden clarified that the tight end did indeed sustain an injury.
As a result of this, it appears that Reed will not be able to play on Sunday afternoon. He has not yet been ruled out, but there seems to be little chance for him to be fully recovered by game time. The team will need some players to step up as a result, and Gruden offered some options at his press conference on Thursday.
I think we have Vernon Davis and Niles Paul ready to roll. Those two guys are very good tight ends. We have good depth at that position with those two. Now we’re a little worried about our depth at that position now. We had three good ones, now we have two, so that’s why we have the other receivers and the backs, you know. So, I think we’ll be OK.
Gruden is absolutely right to be confident in his depth. Since joining the Redskins, Davis has enjoyed a mini renaissance. He is not the dynamic starter he once was, but he still possesses athleticism and has proven to be a quality backup. He can create mismatches and Kirk Cousins will likely try to target him a fair amount on Sunday afternoon.
As for Paul, it has been a while since he played a significant role in the offense. Paul was actually the primary starter for the team back in 2014, but he missed the entire 2015 season with an injury. He is a very solid, all-around guy who can block, catch passes, and play special teams. If Davis can make up for the receiving yards that Reed would produce and let Paul take care of the blocking, then the offense will be in fine shape.
Being without Reed is not an ideal situation for the Redskins. However, the team has to be happy that they have strong enough depth to remain competitive without him on the field. Hopefully Reed will be ready to go in Week 7. And hey, maybe he will surprise us all and be ready to go this week. With concussions, it is impossible to tell what will happen.
