Jared Goff listed as Rams' backup quarterback on first depth chart

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:29 p.m. ET

The Los Angeles Rams are starting a new era in their new home of California after spending the past 20-plus years in St. Louis. In doing so, the Rams are ushering in an exciting future at quarterback with rookie Jared Goff.

That buzz might be put on hold for a bit, though. The Rams released the first Los Angeles-edition of their depth chart on Monday since 1994, and it lacks thrill atop the quarterback heap.

Goff is listed as the backup to Case Keenum, who started five games for the Rams last season. He threw four touchdowns and one pick with a passer rating of 87.7. It’s hard to imagine Goff won’t be able to beat out a guy with 15 career touchdown passes fairly quickly, but he hasn’t done so yet.

On Friday, Jeff Fisher said Keenum would start the team’s preseason opener against the Cowboys, so Goff’s role as a backup isn’t overly surprising.

As for Keenum’s targets, Kenny Britt and Tavon Austin are listed as starters at wide receiver. Todd Gurley, of course, is the top back with Benny Cunningham No. 2.

The Rams are strong up front but somewhat thin at safety. Cody Davis is the starting free safety, while Maurice Alexander is the top strong safety. Mark Barron, who played a hybrid role last season, is simply listed as a safety on the sheet.
