WR Walters pushing for roster spot with Jaguars
Veteran wide receiver Bryan Walters used another strong performance in Jacksonville's preseason loss to the Detroit Lions last Friday to make his case for a roster spot.
Walters, who signed as free agent in the offseason from the the Seattle Seahawks, leads the Jaguars in receiving through the first three games, with 10 catches for 102 yards.
With the season-ending injury to Arrelious Benn and the release of Tandon Doss, Walters has a chance to make the team as a fifth receiver.
"He’s gotten some opportunities,” Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said, per the team's official website. “What I like about him is when he has opportunities he takes advantage of it. He catches the balls that are thrown to him, he runs really good routes, the quarterbacks trust him and the team trusts him. … He really is a guy that has worked his way up the depth chart and taken advantage of his reps.”
Also helping his case is Walters' ability on special teams. Bradley noted the 27-year-old has the potential to play on all four special teams units, which may further increase his chances.
Bradley said Walters and Tony Washington figure to see extensive playing time in Thursday's preseason finale against the Washinton Redskins as the team tries to determine who to keep as a fifth receiver behind Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Marqise Lee and Rashad Greene.
“We’ve got to find out that spot and (Walters and Washington) are in the mix,” Bradley said.
