INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts coach Chuck Pagano has promoted Rob Chudzinski to associate head coach.

Chudzinski was hired last year as a special assistant to Pagano after one season as Cleveland's head coach.

Recent reports said other teams wanted to interview Chudzinski, but the Colts had blocked those discussions. General manager Ryan Grigson did not confirm those reports last week but did say he would make sure ''good people'' stayed in the building.

Pagano and Chudzinski first met at the University of Miami. Since then, Chudzinski has spent more than two decades in the coaching business including two seasons each in Cleveland and Carolina as the offensive coordinator.

Pagano calls Chudzinski a ''critical'' part of Indy's success and its future.
