Houston Texans: Rick Smith States The Obvious, Needs Quarterback

The Houston Texans need a quarterback badly, and general manager Rick Smith basically admitted as much during a recent press conference

A lot of talk this offseason for the Houston Texans has centered around one question: Who will play quarterback in 2017? Last season, it was free agent pickup Brock Osweiler. His play was so bad that the Texans essentially gave up a second-round pick for the Cleveland Browns to take on his huge deal.

From there, they were then connected to former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. The 37-year-old opted for a job calling games for CBS and again Houston was back to the drawing board.

However, instead of attempting to bring in a free agent this time, they seemed to hint they were happy with Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden battling for a starting job. This idea seems a little frightening for a team coming off back-to-back AFC South titles, but the Texans have been persistent.

Despite experienced starters like Jay Cutler and Colin Kaepernick sitting jobless, they have stayed the course. The reason for that may not be because they're content with who they have though. General manager Rick Smith hinted at the team looking to the draft for another quarterback in a recent press release where he said the team intended to go three deep at the position.

With them not bringing a soul in for so much as a visit during free agency, the only other logical explanation would be a focus on rookies. Currently Houston drafts 25th, but has a history of moving up for the players they really want.

Keep an eye on the Texans should a talented quarterback like Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina, Patrick Mahomes II of Texas Tech or Deshaun Watson of Clemson start to slide into the teens. Anyone of them would be an upgrade over Savage or Weeden.

Should Houston be unable to land a starting caliber rookie, maybe their avoidance of players like Cutler and Kaepernick could change.
