Texans owner McNair: We have a good chance at getting a QB in the draft
Houston Texans owner Bob McNair may have tipped his hat on Thursday when he strongly hinted that his team will look to select one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2016 NFL Draft.
McNair appeared at an event for the Houston Super Bowl committee to discuss Super Bowl LI -- which will be hosted at NRG Stadium in Houston. During the event, he talked about how more reliable quarterback play will help make the Texans contenders to play in Super Bowl LI.
Via The Houston Chronicle:
"There are a number of quarterbacks out there, college quarterbacks coming out and I think we have a good chance at getting one of them," McNair said. "There are four or five of them who look like they have enough talent and size and athletic ability. I don't know any reason why we wouldn't be able to do it."
The Texans have the No. 22 overall pick, and until this point, there have been three quarterback prospects tossed around in the first-round conversation -- Cal's Jared Goff, North Dakota State's Carson Wentz and Memphis' Paxton Lynch. But it's early in the draft process, and it's difficult to tell where any of those three prospects will be drafted.
McNair mentioned "four or five" quarterback prospects, and although the above three are most talked about, the Texans may have their eye on a few other prospects. McNair could be referring to Michigan State's Connor Cook or Mississippi State's Dak Prescott. Of course, you can't rule out Penn State's Christian Hackenberg -- Texans head coach Bill O'Brien coached him during his freshman year.
It will be interesting to track the pre-draft chatter at the quarterback position leading up to the draft. Although there may not be any Andrew Luck-esque prospects at the top, there is a lot of depth. If McNair gets his wish, a rookie quarterback could end up playing meaningful snaps for the Texans in 2016.
