DE Fili Moala hoping to stay healthy in Houston

After landing on injured reserve with the Indianapolis Colts three consecutive years, new Houston Texans defensive end Fili Moala is hoping to leave his history of knee problems behind him.

In 2012, a knee injury limited the Moala to just eight games. The following year, the former USC standout was placed on IR with another knee injury after a playoff win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Last year, the 30-year-old missed the entire season after tearing his ACL during OTAs.

"It was a long process, but I have a true love for this game and so I wasn’t going to go out like that,” Moala said, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. “I understand the situation, I understand the magnitude of this, so I have going to make the most of my opportunity and go from there."

Moala, a second-round pick by the Colts in 2009, signed a one-year deal with the Texans on Wednesday.

“It’s good to have Fili back,” Houston head coach Bill O’Brien said. “He’s coming off of knees and I think he’s doing better. I think he’s got to work his way into football shape, but we’re happy to have him here. We hear great things about him, we know he’s a tough guy, he’s got good size, so hopefully he can work his way back into football shape pretty quickly.”

The  6-foot-4, 308-pound Moala has 88 career tackles and 3.5 sacks.
