Bill O’Brien is done talking about Brock Osweiler: 'We're moving on'

Not every free-agent signing pans out. Some players simply get paid more than they’re actually worth, leading to disappointment upon joining their new team.

Then there’s Brock Osweiler – one of the biggest mistakes in the history of NFL free agency.

He signed a four-year, $72 million deal last offseason, which paid him $37 million guaranteed after starting just seven games beforehand. The Texans gave him that contract without ever meeting him in person, rushing to beat other teams to the punch.

It blew up in the faces of GM Rick Smith and coach Bill O’Brien as Osweiler held a Super Bowl-caliber team back all season. O’Brien and Osweiler had a rocky relationship that resulted in sideline outbursts and reported meeting-room arguments, proving to be a partnership that couldn’t work.

O’Brien now has commented on Houston’s recent decision to trade Osweiler to the Browns, and his non-answer is telling

"I think Rick Smith's statement said it all," O'Brien said before a Special Olympics banquet, via the Houston Chronicle. "We wish Brock the best, but we're moving on to 2017."

Now, the Texans have yet another gaping hole at quarterback. Tom Savage is on the roster, but he simply can’t be trusted to remain healthy or play with any sort of consistency.

"I've always felt good about Tom," O'Brien said. "He's a hard-working guy. He's got an excellent arm. But he's been injured. He hasn't had great luck when it comes to the health front.

"We've enjoyed working with Tom, and we look forward to working with him starting April 17 (the offseason program begins)."
