Giants reportedly use franchise tag on star DE Jason Pierre-Paul

The New York Giants might not be willing to commit long term to Jason Pierre-Paul, but the club definitely wants the star defensive end back for at least 2017, placing the franchise tag on the 28-year-old on Monday, according to multiple reports.

The deal, which was first reported by Pro Football Talk, was not completed before the 4 p.m. ET deadline, so the club can’t announce it until Tuesday, according to NFL Network.

The Giants have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal with Pierre-Paul, who signed a one-year deal with the Giants last year. Pierre-Paul, who suffered a serious injury to his right hand during a fireworks mishap, had seven sacks in just 12 games last season.

According to ESPN, the Giants were concerned about slapping the tag on Pierre-Paul, fearing it would make him unhappy, but the club was convinced he would sign with another team if he hit the open market.

This is the second time the Giants have used the tag on Pierre-Paul, who played under those terms two years ago.
