Former Titan Colin McCarthy retires

Middle linebacker Colin McCarthy, who was named the Tennessee Titans' defensive captain in just his second season in the NFL, announced his retirement Thursday at the age of 27.

McCarthy broke the news and Twitter and confirmed his decision to the Miami Herald.

Tennessee's fourth-round pick in 2011 out of the University of Miami, McCarthy struggled with injuries during his professional career.

After a promising rookie season in which he recorded 68 tackles, McCarthy was named the team's defensive captain the following year. In 2012, McCarthy scored the only touchdown of his NFL career, on a 49-yard interception return in Tennessee's 37-3 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 10. However, an ankle injury and a concussion limited him to just seven starts in 2012.

He returned to play in all 16 games in 2013, but suffered a shoulder injury in the Titans' preseason opener last season and missed the entire season.

The Titans took time on Thursday to recognize McCarthy.
