Fans get last glimpse of Titans in training camp

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) First-year coach Ken Whisenhunt hasn't alerted anyone to the final date of Tennessee's training camp.

Fans got their last look Tuesday, and the Titans say they are fine staying on a camp schedule as long as needed. Receive Kendall Wright said they're just playing it by ear.

''Whenever he says it's time to be over, then it will be,'' Wright said. ''Other than that, we'll keep going to the late meetings and having curfew.''

Safety Bernard Pollard said less information is better with Whisenhunt figuring out if this is a team that can handle knowing a schedule ahead of time.

Last year's Titans couldn't, and Pollard said he loves what Whisenhunt and his coaching staff is doing.

''We don't need to worry about a schedule,'' Pollard said. ''We don't need to worry about breaking camp. What we need to worry about is playing better and continuing to get better as we get ready for the regular season.''

One benefit of staying in training camp is the Titans can practice in pads once a day. Wright also joked that the talkative Pollard will help replace any lost crowd noise with fans no longer allowed to watch.

Whisenhunt thanked fans for their support and says he is sorry the Titans didn't have more than the nine open sessions. He said they'll see if they can work on that next year.

''Next week we go into an in-season week schedule, and I think it's really important for that to make it as much like an in-season week, because we've never done that,'' Whisenhunt said. ''We've never done a game week together. That's the reason for it this year.''

The Titans visit New Orleans on Friday night and will have a full week to prepare for a trip to Atlanta for the third exhibition Aug. 23.

The season opener is Sept. 7 in Kansas City, part of a schedule featuring three of the first four games on the road.

Fans turning out Tuesday got to see a feisty practice.

The defense wasn't happy with giving up an opening touchdown drive to Green Bay and backup quarterback Matt Flynn in Tennessee's preseason opener, so the Titans picked off each quarterback Monday while forcing lots of fumbles.

The offense bounced back after starting one team drill Tuesday with a fumble by Shonn Greene and a dropped pass by Jackie Battle.

A scuffle also broke out between linebacker David Gilbert and tight end Chase Coffman followed by plenty of pushing and shoving.

Practice concluded nearly 20 minutes early after a competitive red zone drill that featured tight end Craig Stevens spiking the ball near linebacker Derrick Morgan after scoring.

''We've gotten a lot of good work done,'' Whisenhunt said. ''You're going to have days like this. It's an emotional game. We had a good battle going in the red zone. That's an important area. After yesterday, when the offense was shut out, it was nice to see them respond today the way they did.''

Notes: Whisenhunt said LB Colin McCarthy will see Dr. James Andrews next week for a second opinion on his shoulder. McCarthy was hurt against Green Bay. WR Justin Hunter had his name back on his jersey Tuesday after an assistant coach put ''J A G'' in place of his name for Monday's practice reminding him to be more precise.
