The Eagles have picked up the fifth-year, $7.799 million contract option on defensive lineman Fletcher Cox, the team announced on Monday. He is now under contract with the team through the 2016 season, but the Eagles can still work out a long-term deal with Cox at any time.
Cox broke out last season playing the 5-technique defensive end position in Billy Davis’ 3-4 base defensive scheme. He racked up 70 tackles, seven tackles for loss, four sacks, 14 hurries and a forced fumble in 2014. He finished as Pro Football Focus’ fifth-best 3-4 defensive end with plus marks as a pass rusher and run defender. Cox’s disruption on the interior allowed outside linebackers Connor Barwin, Trent Cole and Brandon Graham to isolate themselves and win in one-on-one situations.
Still just 24 years old, Cox’s stock is on the rise.
