Drew Brees versus Colin Kaepernick...seriously?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The issue that has been brought up by Colin Kaepernick is one that is important. Some will agree and others will disagree on how Kaepernick protested. But it does seem odd that people are calling Drew Brees out on his comments about Colin Kaepernick’s methods? The reasoning is actually pretty clear.

So most of everyone has heard the story of Colin Kaepernick protesting social injustice by sitting down during the national anthem. This story has taken a life of its own as the coverage has exploded into the national media. Jerry Rice has this to say.

“All lives matter. So much is going on in this world today. Can we all just get along! Colin, I respect  your stance but don’t disrespect the flag.”

On the other hand there is Jim Brown who is one of the best running backs to ever play the game.

I listened to him and he makes all the sense in the world. He’s within his rights and he’s telling the truth as he sees it and I am with him 100 percent.

There are others that have spoken in support and against the way Kaepernick has protested. These type of issues will always have supporters and detractors on both ends. Both sides claim that the other is wrong. Both sides will also give their stance on why their view is the better one.

When Drew Brees spoke on this issue there seemed to be somewhat of an extra backlash against him, even with some of Who Dat Nation. The backlash seems to totally reflect what’s going on in politics sadly enough. There is a friend of mine that told me that in today’s climate, the people are either on one side or the other.

The world that we live in today seems to get very upset about anything or anyone, who has an opinion that differs from their own point of view. Social media obviously can throw gas on the fire to an already touchy subject. The real question is, can anyone look at it from both sides? Or is it simply a matter of being right and wrong.

The idolizing of sports players does come with a price. Being a well known NFL player has its own baggage that comes with the job, like it or not. The microscope is on all elite players 24 hours a day and seven days a week. This is something that should be understood. The main concern is can fans separate the player on the field and the human outside of it? Professional athletes to their dismay are held to a higher level.

Next week this will be an old story. However, the problems that Kaepernick speaks about will continue. The flag is not the real issue. It seems that the disrespect of something symbolic is really the issue at hand. The flag is an object. Surely it represents freedom and liberty to many. Others just simply see it another way. The only way any of these issues will get attention though is a discussion between others, not just the professional athletes.
