Dolphins reportedly agree to acquire tight end Julius Thomas from Jaguars
The Miami Dolphins have agreed in principle to acquire tight end Julius Thomas from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2017 late-round draft pick, the Miami Herald reported Monday.
The move, which cannot be completed until the start of the league's new year March 9, reunites Thomas with Dolphins head coach Adam Gase, who was the offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos when Thomas had two consecutive 12-touchdown seasons. Thomas made the Pro Bowl in each of those seasons.
But the 28-year-old tight end saw his production take a dramatic hit in his two seasons in Jacksonville. Thomas, who signed a five-year, $46 million deal with the Jags in 2015, caught only nine touchdowns during his time in Jacksonville.
According to the report, Thomas’ current contract has been cut significantly, but he can earn back much of that money through incentives. Pairing Thomas with quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who had a down year in 2016, could revitalize both of their careers.
