Report: Ex-Cowboys DB Spillman charged with sexual assault

Former Dallas Cowboys defensive back and special teams player C.J. Spillman, who is currently a free agent, was officially charged with sexual assault on Monday stemming from an alleged incident at a Dallas-area hotel last September, the New York Daily News reported.

The accusation came one day after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell indicated that the league would get tougher with violent offenders of the personal conduct policy.

The incident allegedly occurred at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas on Sept. 20, 2014, a day before the Cowboys played at St. Louis. The team flew to St. Louis later that Saturday, and Spillman played in Dallas' 34-31 win.

Grapevine police concluded their investigation into the matter in February, and official charges were brought against the special teams standout by the Tarrant County grand jury on Monday.

Despite the accusation and the league’s self-proclaimed tougher stance on such allegations, Spillman played all 16 games for the Cowboys last year. Head coach Jason Garrett indicated throughout the season that the team was going to wait until more facts came out before taking further action. Now a free agent, the Cowboys don’t have to worry about the veteran defensive back.
