Colts want to find starting offensive line early in camp

Aside from improving the Indianapolis Colts' defense, head coach Chuck Pagano's biggest challenge heading into training camp may be to find a stable group of starters along the offensive line.

Keeping star quarterback Andrew Luck healthy and the field will be crucial for the Colts' Super Bowl hopes. With that in mind, Pagano wants to establish a starting five early during the team's camp at Anderson University to give the group time to gel.

"It’s going to be imperative that once we get to Anderson on August 1, we get, as fast as we can, five guys out there and get them playing together so there’s continuity together,” Pagano said, via the team's official website. “From a communication standpoint, it’s great for the quarterback. It’s great for everybody.”

Anthony Castonzo will continue to be the anchor of the line at left tackle. The Colts signed veteran guard Todd Herremans in the offseason to and he is likely to start at one guard spot. But there are questions about the other spots. Right tackle Gosder Cherilus is recovering from offseason surgery. In his absence, guard Jack Mewhort took snaps at the position during the team's OTAs and minicamp. At center, Khaled Holmes and Jonotthan Harrison will compete for the starting job. In all, the Colts will go to camp with 10 linemen who have started in the NFL, giving the team plenty of options.

“We do have a lot of guys that have played a lot of football and there’s going to be a ton of competition at a bunch of spots, especially those interior spots, those guard spots and that center spot,” Pagano said.  “Everybody is wondering who that right tackle is going to be, but we’ve got a bunch of guys who have played quality snaps at those spots. It’s going to be interesting and I can’t wait to see what the final product is.”

If the Colts can arrive at a cohesive group that gives Luck time to operate, the offense should be every bit as explosive as team hopes.
