Colts Release Safety Winston Guy

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that the team has waived safety Winston Guy, leaving them with an open 53-man roster spot currently.

The 26 year old safety was originally signed by the Colts to their practice squad in October of 2014 before being promoted to the active roster for 12 games this past season, finishing with 6 tackles.

Guy had appeared in 2 games to start this season, having had 4 tackles. He had seen extended playing time in recent weeks with injuries to other safeties such as Clayton Geathers and T.J. Green.

Having been originally selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 6th round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Guy has also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars organization. The 4th-year safety has appeared in 37 career games (5 starts), recording 35 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 passes defensed, and a forced fumble.

Guy’s release could both mean that the Colts weren’t exactly satisfied with his performance at safety on Sunday, but also that rookie T.J. Green–who was battling a mild MCL sprain this past week, as well as Clayton Geathers could be healthy for this weekend’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

However, it’s still surprising given that Guy was a key contributor on special teams and played 37 snaps this past weekend.

Nevertheless, undrafted rookie Matthias Farley has played relatively well in limited action–with the Colts being high on his potential, and it could be a case of Guy simply being the odd man out at the position by virtue of being pushed out of the 4th safety spot.
