A kneeling Colin Kaepernick is on the cover of 'TIME' magazine

The most talked about player in the NFL this year isn't a starter and hasn't entered a game yet this season. San Francisco 49ers backup Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem last month in a preseason game and explained afterwards that he would not "show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color."

Since Kapernick began kneeling, a number of fellow NFL players have joined him in solidarity, either by kneeling or raising a fist during the anthem. Soccer star Megan Rapinoe joined Kaepernick in kneeling to "keep the conversation going," and the movement has spread to the WNBA and high school athletics

On Wednesday, TIME magazine released its latest cover for the October 3rd issue, which features Kaepernick kneeling in uniform.

Kaepernick revealed earlier this week that he's received death threats since he began to protest the anthem.

49ers coach Chip Kelly said Thursday that he believes Kaepernick has handled the extra attention from his protests well.
