Cliff Avril still not over Seahawks' Super Bowl defeat

Published Jul. 10, 2015 2:18 p.m. ET

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril is still having a hard time forgetting about last year's brutal ending to the Super Bowl. Avril was playing one of his best games on the world's biggest stage, before eventually having to leave the game in the 3rd quarter with a concussion.

"It was real disappointing,” Avril said, via The News Tribune. “All of us are competitors; all of us want to be out there to help our team win in any kind of way. For me not to be able to finish one of the biggest games you’ll ever play in, it sucked.”

When Avril looks back on it now, he is glad that the doctors did not allow him to return to the game. He knows coming back in could have ended up being detrimental to his career.

“I’m glad the docs decided to not put me back in,” Avril said. “Concussions aren’t anything to play with.”

Avril is grateful to be on such a good team that has a chance to win every year, especially after starting his career with the Detroit Lions, who were one of the worst teams in the NFL.

“It was amazing, man — especially how my career went,” Avril said. “As a rookie, I went 0-16 in Detroit, and then to go to the Super Bowl two years back-to-back, it’s been a huge blessing.”

Avril would like to return to the Super Bowl again this year and knows it is a real possibility with the Seahawks returning so many key guys.

“Who wouldn’t want to repeat (reaching the Super Bowl)?” Avril asked. “Of course, we want to repeat, but we want to go ahead and make it happen this year; we have pretty much the same guys.”
