Me, worried? Trestman expects to be back as Bears coach
Before the Bears took the field on Sunday, FOX Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer reported that "all the coaches believe they will be out" in Chicago.
Then the team laid an egg in its season finale, failing to score a TD and losing at Minnesota 13-9.
So naturally head coach Marc Trestman told the media after the game he expects to be back next season.
"My plan is to continue to finalize my notes now that the season is over and make sure that when the opportunity arises I'll be able to explain how to fix this thing," Trestman, 13-19 in two seasons in Chicago, said after the game, "because we have to get better."
Despite a new contract for QB Jay Cutler this offseason and another season in Trestman's QB-friendly offense, the Bears went just 5-11, Trestman and Cutler bearing the brunt of fans' ire and critics' barbs.
"We all regressed. I regressed. Our offense regressed dramatically for a number of reasons," Trestman said.
After the Vikings drove to the 3-yard line late in the game, Matt Asiata was stuffed for no gain on the same play on both third-and-1 and fourth-and-1 to give Cutler and the Bears one last opportunity with 2:53 left and a four-point deficit.
They bungled it, metaphorically for this mess of a season. Three flags, including two false starts, plus an incompletion doomed the drive.
"It's part of the game. That's kind of how it is. I'd like to be back. I said that a couple weeks ago. But whatever happens, we'll deal with it then and make plans accordingly," said Cutler, who finished turnover-free for only the third time in 15 games this season. He was benched in Week 16 but an injury to Jimmy Clausen forced Trestman to go back to Cutler in the finale.
One bright side for the Bears — the NFL announced Sunday night Chicago will have the seventh pick in the draft.
