Cam Newton visits families of Charleston shooting victims

Cam Newton on Monday visited with families who lost loved ones in the church shootings in Charleston, S.C. last week, per a Charlotte Observer report.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback spent part of Monday meeting with Chris Singleton, whose mother, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, was one of the nine victims murdered in the tragic shooting last Wednesday night at Emanuel AME Church. Singleton is a baseball player at Charleston Southern.

A post to social media by Rashard Alston, a linebacker for Newberry College, shows Newton posing with him and Singleton.

"Big ups to my man @CameronNewton for reaching out to me and coming to pay his respects to my bro!" Alston wrote on Twitter, posting two photographs.

Sanders, 26, tried to protect his relative, Susie Jackson, 87, during the massacre. Both perished in the shooting.

Newton wasn’t the only member of the Panthers organization to attempt to support the families of the victims of Wednesday night’s tragedy. Team owner Jerry Richardson donated $10,000 to the families of each of the nine victims along with a $10,000 donation to the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

In a letter to the church, per an ESPN report, Richardson mentioned each victim’s name — Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Cynthia Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lance, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Rev. Clementa Pinckney, Tywanza Sanders, Rev. Daniel Simmons Sr., and Myra Thompson — and wrote that the donations were made to help “defray funeral costs and other financial needs of each.”
