Buster Skrine: Corners are 'just as important' as quarterbacks

New York Jets cornerback Buster Skrine continues to make headlines over the last week or so. Last week, Skrine had very high praise for the talent level on the Jets defense heading into 2015. In fact, in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Skrine went so far as to call the defense a "Dream Team."

“I’ve never played on a defense with this much talent,” Skrine said. “Our front seven has all-stars and then in the back end, we have all-stars. I’ve never seen anything like this. Everybody said the Philadelphia Eagles were going to be like the Dream Team, but we have chemistry on this defense already, and you can see it out in practice. I mean, we can match up however you want to match up. We can match up with any offense.”

Skrine didn't stop there as he continued to talk about the importance of the cornerback position in today's NFL in the interview.

“In the NFL now, it’s such a heavy passing league, and everybody’s throwing the ball all the time,” said Skrine. “I feel like a lot of teams will start doing the same thing we did and invest a lot of money in corners,” Skrine said. “Because it’s just as important as quarterback[s] now a days.”

To be fair, Skrine isn't necessarily wrong in what he is saying as teams have invested heavily in the quarterback position in recent years. Additionally, the NFL has seen teams throw more and more every season. According to Fantasy Football Today, 28 of the 32 teams threw the ball more than they ran it. In fact, eight teams had a passed the ball more than 60 percent of the time in 2014!

While Skrine has brought up a lot of good points, I'm sure head coach Todd Bowles wished his players would start adhering to his emphasis on letting their play do the talking.
