Bills release veteran RB Fred Jackson

Teams are required to trim their rosters to 75 players this week, meaning hundreds of players will be without a job in the coming days.

Surprisingly, Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson is among them as he was released by the team on Monday. Jackson played nine seasons with the Bills and was listed as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart for the upcoming season.

The team confirmed the move as GM Doug Whaley issued a statement regarding Jackson's release, saying he's had an "incredible career" in Buffalo.

Jackson came into the league with the Bills in 2006 as a free agent after playing in an indoor football league, as well as NFL Europa. He topped 1,000 yards rushing in 2009, but reached the century mark in yards from scrimmage in five of the last six seasons.

Jackson, 34, was due to make $2.35 million this year for the Bills. He was in the middle of a crowded backfield led by LeSean McCoy, who's likely to play in Week 1 given Jackson's release.

He never reached the playoffs during his time with the Bills, which is something that could change if he's signed by another team. He'll likely look to join a contender as a third-down and goal line back. He excels in both areas, catching 322 passes and scoring 37 total touchdowns over the course of his career.
