Brett Favre describes the most memorable play of his career

It’s Hall of Fame weekend in the NFL, as the sport’s best and brightest are in Canton to kick off the season and honor some of the game’s greats. This year’s Hall of Fame class is especially star-studded, with names like Tony Dungy, Marvin Harrison and Orlando Pace being inducted Saturday night.

At the same time, there is one man who rises above them all, not necessarily in pure football accomplishments, but the allure around him. That is Brett Favre, the old gunslinger, who will be inducted after 16 years in the NFL that included stops in Atlanta, New York and Minnesota, but most notably for his time with the Green Bay Packers.

By now we’ve already discussed Favre’s single greatest game here on FoxSports.com, but on Friday, Favre was asked about the single most memorable play of his career. His answer was surprising, since it didn’t come from his time with the Green Bay Packers, but instead the Minnesota Vikings. There, he threw a game-winning touchdown pass to little-known receiver Greg Lewis in September 2009 to beat the 49ers.

When Favre discusses ‘where I was in my career’ he was of course referring to his time in Minnesota, two years after the Packers had moved off of him in favor of Aaron Rodgers, and a year after a failed season with the Jets. The game against San Francisco was just the third game of the season, and no one -- including Favre -- could have known what was going to come later in the year.

As it turns out, Minnesota went on to a 12-4 record, and advanced all the way to the NFC Championship Game before losing to the Saints. Favre himself had his last great season as well, throwing for over 4,200 yards and 33 touchdowns, to go along with just seven interceptions.

According to Favre’s coach that season Brad Childress, that one play set the tone for the entire season. It also came off one of those famed Brett Favre audibles.

Childress’ boss, GM Rick Spielman agreed. From there he added that he believed Favre was the best player in the NFL that season.

He just might have been the best QB in the NFL that season, and is undoubtedly one of the best to ever play the game.

He’ll be honored for it this weekend in Canton.
