Bill Callahan working his interior offensive linemen at multiple positions

Washington Redskins offensive line coach Bill Callahan is taking an interesting approach to his interior offensive line. Instead of allowing each player to practice at one position and get the most possible repetitions there, he is working his offensive guards at multiple spots along the line, including at center.

“Every one of these guards that we have are cross-trained at center, with the exception of Shawn,” Callahan said, per the Washington Post. “I think we are cross-training five or six of them. So far, so good.”

Callahan still has his favorites to start at different spots along the line. One of those favorites is former third-round pick Spencer Long, who Callahan hopes will compete and win the starting right guard job.

“He’s a strong, athletic type of guy,” Callahan said of Long (6-5, 311). “Putting him into that [right guard] position and trying to elevate his skill-level is a challenge for all of us. Hopefully he can hang onto it and compete for that starting spot.”

The Redskins’ interior line will likely feature Shawn Lauvao at left guard, Kory Lichtensteiger at center and Spencer Long at right guard. Callahan is hoping that all three players are well versed with all three positions, in case injuries force on of them to shift out of their projected positions.
