Report: Ravens add veteran pass rusher Jason Babin to help fill Suggs' shoes

Published Sep. 15, 2015 11:45 p.m. ET

With linebacker Terrell Suggs lost for the season, the Baltimore Ravens have reportedly signed veteran pass rusher Jason Babin.

Babin, who was released earlier this month by the Jets after one season in New York, signed a one-year deal for the veterans minimum, according to The Baltimore Sun. The Ravens also worked out 11-year man Shaun Phillips, but settled on Babin instead.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Babin owns 64.5 sacks in his 11-year career, with his best season coming in 2011, when he notched 18 sacks with the Eagles. The 35-year-old Babin recorded two sacks in part-time duty with the Jets last season, but Pro Football Focus still had him rated as the ninth-best 3-4 outside linebacker in the league with 27 hurries and seven quarterback hits over 470 snaps.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said the team would evaluate potential in-house replacements after Suggs went down with a season-ending Achilles tear on Sunday. Courtney Upshaw is likely to get the biggest increase in playing time, but the addition of a situational pass rusher like Babin may keep fourth-round pick Za'Darius Smith from seeing an increased role. Smith was inactive in Denver.

Suggs will be placed on season-ending injured reserve to free up a roster spot for Babin.
